And the actress tipped to step into Sissy Spacek's shoes? Step forward Lindsay Lohan. Surprisingly, in this frenzied era of remaking 70s and 80s horror classics - Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th et al - Carrie has yet to have been considered for a big screen resurrection.
Following the announcement that Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa - writer of Spider Man: Turn Off The Dark - will be responsible for bringing the new adaptation of King's classic horror novel to the big screen, horror maestro Stephen King hedged his bets on the actress taking the lead. The 63-year-old author told Entertainment Weekly: "I've heard rumblings about a Carrie remake...who knows if it will happen?
"The real question is why, when the original was so good? I mean, not Casablanca, or anything, but a really good horror-suspense film, much better than the book. Although Lindsay Lohan as Carrie White… hmmm. It would certainly be fun to cast."
The original Carrie starred Sissy Spacek in the title role, alongside John Travolta, Amy Irving and Piper Laurie (as a mother so warped she makes Mommy Dearest look saint-like). King also named his dream directors for the Carrie remake: "I guess I could get behind it if they turned the project over to one of the Davids - Lynch or Cronenberg."Yes, Lohan may have been touted to star in numerous films in the last few years with most of them - thanks to her, ahem, 'problems' - coming to nothing, but this is one role that is absolutely perfect for the troubled actress.
After all, she's already cut her teeth as a clueless high-schooler in seminal teen flick Mean Girls, and anyone who has been privy to footage and photo stills from her various stints in court can see that this girl can do maniacal better than anyone in Tinseltown. However - and most importantly of all - LiLo grew up with Dina Lohan as a mother. Nuff said.
